Stroking the ego stick

by admin — Categories: Speech CoachComments Off

Lady’s and Gentlemen, its my pleasure to introduce David. He has many years experience in entrepreneurship leadership training and speech coaching. blaa blaa blaa

How many times have you heard an introduction like this one above? I could be sure to say its many. The host introducing the speaker just talks about the speakers credentials rather than what the audience is interested in hearing. Its almost as if the introduction is stroking the presenters ego to ready them for show time.

There is a golden rule that should be followed when giving an introduction.
“The purpose is to frame the speeches content but more importantly its to explain to the audience what benefits they will receive from listening to the speech”.

This is a bit harder than it sounds but not that much harder that is should be avoided or forgotten about.

Example:
“Our speaker today will outline in 3 easy steps how you can easily manage your business to enable more free time to enjoy with your family and your own activities. His speech entitled ‘Coconut beach’, David Gelkin”

Did you see the difference. The example was focusing on the “cheese” element of what interests the audience and what are the triggers for them. The speech after all is for them, right! From the introduction the audience should be 100% focused on the speaker and the speakers message.

The key is to “BEE”

by admin — Categories: Speech CoachComments Off

For as long as I can remember I have always enjoyed being in the spot-light.

I can recall my first ever huge spot-light performance was when I was a very young cub scout in the UK. I was an extra in a major on-stage performance of Charles Dickens ‘A Christmas Carol’. On centre stage in front of a capacity audience for 4 straight nightly performances as part of the Annual Gang Show presentation. I honestly was in my element. I enjoyed the rush of adrenalin and the calm that came just before the spot-light turned on. I would look out towards the audience and see just darkness. The stage spotlight shining directly into my eyes. The audience was also “really” quiet. This possibly made the task easier at the time.

These experiences fuelled my confidence. However my biggest weakness was content. To be specific to remember my content and lines. I would spend hours and hours rehearsing and practising until I got what I liked and was ready for prime time.

Then it happened… My mind goes blank. Completely empty. I can honestly say that if you had even asked me my name at that point i would of replied “Umm”.

You could say its a form of stage fright. This complaint has haunted me for many years. However, if you ask or participate in any of my more recent speeches you could never tell.

I have two secrets which have enabled me to overcome this issue.

The first is I got very good at improvising. If I couldn’t remember what I planned to say or was scripted to of said. I basically made it up on the spot. I was fluid and my performances for the most part were received with positive appreciation and recommendations. I was able to comfortably conduct presentations with only this skill. However I always felt I could do better. I knew I could perform at a higher level. My prepared speeches are of a very high standard so I was hearing. So how was I to overcome this original problem rather than just go around it.

In my regular activity of book research and reading on the topic of public speaking I discovered a technique called “BEE”. This was an acronym for “Big fat claim”, “Explanation”, “Example”. This as I would come to discover was my key.

So to recap, my issue was remembering a speech when it was time for a performance to begin. Even though I created the original content I would go completely blank at the wrong moment.

Using the BEE technique I was able to use my improvisation skills and remember only the key BEE components. It actually was so that I could almost word-for-word recite a prepared speech which had first been created with this method in mind initially. Then as I performed the speech the logical ordering and the method structure kept everything together.

Later still in my speaking career. I would discover the BEE method is used in a lot of different ways for a lot of different results.

customer perception

by admin — Categories: Speech Coach1 Comment

I had a recent discussion with a potential client the other day who was repeatedly saying she needed to partner or hire some experts as her own experience was insufficient.

On the surface this seemed like a good well thought out and logical route. However I caught on very fast that this was also the message she was telling her potential clients. As a result she did not have any client beating a way to her company’s door.

All Marketers are liars - Seth GodinI made the suggestion that possibly she was telling too much. As a result she was harming her business efforts and inadvertently sabotaging her potential customer base. I discovered her main concern was she wanted to be honest to the clients she was talking too, which I totally agreed with her about. I then informed her that even in widely read books such as “all marketers are liars” the core of a marketing message was honesty. However the way that message is packaged can be very different and creative.

As an example I mentioned to her rather than telling her customers she needed to find experts as her own skills were not enough. It possibly could be an alternative to mention “She regularly would use expert consultants in different aspects of her projects.”. At least to me this did not sound as if she was incapable of handling any projects, which the original pitch did.

Pregnant? Omega-3 Essential for Baby’s Brain

Simply essential for life

Advanced Attention Span in Babies Whose Mothers Eat More Essential Fats
By Salynn Boyles
WebMD Health News

July 16, 2004 — Research has suggested that increasing intake of dietary omega-3 fatty acids may have a number of health benefits. And babies whose diets include an abundance of essential fats seem to have an edge in terms of early development. Now new research shows that the same is true for infants born to mothers whose diets contain plenty of this essential fatty acid.

Researchers found that infants born to mothers with higher blood levels of the omega-3 fatty acid docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) at delivery had advanced levels of attention spans well into their second year of life. During the first six months of life, these infants were two months ahead of those babies whose mothers had lower DHA levels.

Attention is considered an important, but not the only, component of intelligence early in life, lead researcher John Colombo, PhD, tells WebMD.

“This adds to the mounting evidence that DHA plays an important part in brain development,” he says.

DHA is important for the developing brain, which accumulates large amounts of it during the first two years of life. Compared to the rest of the body, the brain and nervous system contains very high levels of DHA but its exact role in the brain is not fully known.

Advantages Lasted

DHA is found naturally in breast milk and is now available in infant formulas and some baby foods. Atlantic salmon, Pacific cod fish, and tuna are some of the best food sources of the omega- 3 fatty acid, but algae-derived DHA supplements are also now available.

The study involved some 70 mothers and infants. At the ages of 4-, 6-, and 8-months of age, the babies were tested for visual learning ability. The testing involved showing them pictures and recording their reactions.

“We know from past research that when we show babies pictures during the first year of life, as they get older they look less and less,” Colombo says. “The reason is that they are taking in the information faster as they develop.”

Babies born to mothers who had higher blood levels of DHA scored better on the attention tests until 6 months of age, and they scored better on different tests designed to measure visual learning in older babies at 1 year and 18 months. The findings are reported in the July/August issue of the journal Child Development.

Not So Fishy Food Sources

While Colombo says he encourages his pregnant friends to add salmon to their diets, he adds that it is not yet clear how much DHA a woman needs during pregnancy. He hopes to answer this question in future studies with nutritionist and co-author Susan Carlson, PhD.

“What we can say right now is that authorities are concerned that pregnant women are not getting enough omega-3 in their diets,” Carlson tells WebMD. “A number of observational studies suggests a link between DHA levels during pregnancy and a baby’s behavioral performance.”

Not So Fishy Food Sources continued…

But getting DHA from food sources can be problematic for pregnant women. The FDA recommends eating up to 12 ounces (two average meals) a week of a variety of fish and shellfish that are low in mercury, such as shrimp, canned light tuna, salmon, pollock, and catfish.

Mercury is less of an issue with salmon than tuna, but concerns have been raised about unsafe levels of the toxic chemical dioxin and polychlorinated byphenols (PCBs) in farmed salmon. PCBs have been linked to cancer and birth defects.

Nutritionist Barbara Levine, PhD, recommends that pregnant women get their DHA through algae-derived supplements, available in health food stores. Omega-3-fortified eggs are another good source of DHA.

Levine says studies suggest that women need about 250 mg of DHA daily during pregnancy, but very few are getting it.

“It is true that we don’t get a lot of DHA in our diets,” she says. “It took forever to get the message across about the importance of folic acid early in pregnancy, but now it is in our wheat products and most women get what they need. Now we are trying to get the message out about DHA.”

Having a Source…

by admin — Categories: MarketingComments Off

The life blood and biggest fear of anyone entering, already IN, or even considering a network marketing business is “Who am I going to speak too.” Or “I don’t know anyone”.

I know this sounds goofy for me to say this, but not having anyone to talk to, is a self impossed limitation that is stopping you from succeeding in the business. Is the business better modelled on a extrovert type of person, sure. But a few simple drills can make anyone an extrovert.

Drill:

1) For the next 7 days just say “Hi” to as many people as you meet. Nothing else, just “Hi”. Whether your walking along the street, walking past someone, Or in an elevator, Or even in the queue at the store. Yes this does feel awkward in the beginning. But I promise after 1 week of just saying “Hi” to everyone you meet. Your convidence will be sky high.

2) For the next 7 days, people who respond back positively, comment positively on ANY item in the local vacinity such as “Its getting cold now…” OR “This lift is slow…” Or “Nice dog…” Or “The flowers are looking good this time of year..” Thats all… Do you see we are now almost engaging in a conversation. The person your speaking to is only a barrier when they are unknown and a stranger. If you have a conversation with them the barrier crumbles away.

3) For the next 7 days, People who respond “Hi” back to you. Reply “My name is …..” Thats all. It sounds all special needs etc… But its just conversation. Most normal people will respond with a smile or a knod, or even reply with there own name. Ofcourse this does not work too well walking along the street. Without BOTH of you stopping…:)

BIG NOTE: don’t immediately start jumping all over them about your business. Just practice talking to people and engage in open conversation. Be interested in them GENUINELY… People are interesting, and everyone has there own story to tell.

So this is my first source of new contacts for you business. Talk to people you meet during the day. Everyday is not impossible.

NOTE: Not everyone is good for your business, and YOUR business is not good for everyone. So there is no need to promote either your business or products, until there is an obvious reason from the other person “The NEED” for you to do so.

The next source is purchased leads.

This is a service provided by online service lead retailers. They get their leads from forms people fill-in, on the internet, asking for further information about a home based business for example. Not all leads retailers are good. Some are really terrible, and a waste of money. But just the act of having a constant supply of potentially interested persons. Is a huge boost to your business building efforts. Your building a business, so this tiny expence on purchasing raw materials, is a neccesity until you can generate your own leads to suppliment your daily business activity.

So the next time you hear members of a network marketing company talking about, “you got to talk your face off!” ;) And your thinking in the back of your mind “you have nodoby to talk your face off too”. This is the most common route to success. There are literially hundreds of thousands of people filling in webforms daily all around the world looking for any information to help them get ahead.

We do have the solution they are looking for. We do have a better way….

What to do in the face of the “Pyramid scam” jibe?

by admin — Categories: MarketingComments Off

Firstly don’t get offended. This is a common response to the initial awareness of a network marketing opportunity. The person saying this, is possibly trying to knock you off guard, and reclaim authority of the conversation to them.

The comment is actually about the triangle shape, not about a real pyramid in Egypt. The triangle being the most stable shape known to man. And used by architects all the time in building design due to its unique properties.

The triangle in the comment implies the top down hierachy of the network marketing compensation structure. You can imagine a sort of upside-down tree with many branches leading out from teh central trunk.

The hierachy though is not restricted to use in network marketing. So it really is a lame jibe? The triangle hierachy is used in virtually all business structures, starting with the CEO at the top and then working down the triangle tree to the vp’s, directors, managers, and finally the end workers. Also in the millitary the same structure, and in the monarcy structure. Even in the structure of your own family tree.

So this jibe if it is intended to be malicious is very weak. The person is not very knowledgable about the industry and you should communicate effectively with them if you wish to the true facts of the “scam”. But note, its common that when you have a response to this type of question, the “jiber” ;) goes into defence mode. As if your some how using your special Jedi mind tricks to part him/her from there cash.

Remember the industry has had many many years of bad press. And now its a period of education, for the masses, this is the goal of every network marketing company in the world. Don’t be smug or insulting to anyone, or bad talk any other business.

There will always be the anti-mlm’r

by admin — Categories: MarketingComments Off

The title says it all. These people typically, young men seem to have found their calling and place in the universe. Its to warn the citizens of planet earth of the scurge known as network marketing. They torrent pages after pages of blog posts and flame war battle grounds and exchange the “pyramid scam” insult as if its the MOAB and the ultimate victory blow. Network marketing is not a bad word ;) Its a word to be proud of, and stand tall knowing your part of it.

Sadly for these individuals the reality is different. I can feel a tiny bit of remorse for them, as there has to be historically some twisted course of events which made them so bitter.

The usual rants are then followed when ask “have they even been in Network Marketing.” that “No, Never, they we’re never that gullable or stupid” or the classic “My friend was, and lost a lot of money”. These excuses to me are gold to my ears.

Firstly they are complaining about an entire industry, they really know nothing about. They have never been involved in, and were never truly interested in making a business venture work.

Its like asking for stock market advice from a guy that only plays fantasy stocks with fake credits. Its a different kettle of fish when your own money is on the line. You take it a bit more serious, and your level of learning improves immensly.

As for the losing money arguement. Please…. Having been the owner of more than one traditional business. The start-up capital of a network marketing business is a joke. In most cases it does not even qualify the deposit of an office rental for a single month in the traditional world.

As for losing money its only lost if you quit the company. All the infrastructure is ready for the team member to use 24/7. So if one person can make it work, and another can’t, then its not the system thats failed is it? Maybe it was the person who failed not following the system as instructed?

Analysing the top earners in ANY mlm company around today. Could you honestly think any of them are a genius or golden child with special abilities? Not really…!! Right :) !! They all have one common attribute however… They stuck it out, and mastered the skills needed to work the business. Its not rocket science, its people skills mostly.  The art of communication!

Now analysing the anti-mlm’r you can see without exception a commonality between them all. Poor communication skills and the in-ability to learn the system and master the business. They wanted the big bucks without the work effort. Without going to the trainings. Without reading the books, and training audio sets. They wanted the easy route, and are now angry that others might succeed, and prove they failed, not because of the company. But simply because they were no good at it, and quit rather than learn new skills. They got into the blame game.

Its almost like attending a 4-5 year university degree program, and only attending for 3 months, then shouting to the world, the university is a scam. You didn’t get a job in any company yet? even though you started uni? Its crazy huh?
